subversive art in the park

I discovered this colorful act of graffiti on an electrical box at a park near my home:

Not ten feet away stands this effigy, acquired by the city:

I'm sure the former will soon be covered or sand-blasted to oblivion. This particular graffiti, visually pleasing and thought provoking, comes across as a relevant, though subversive, work of art that expresses some voice of the community. I don't always feel this way about graffiti. The sculpture, with its movement and medium, has its own, more acceptable expression.  What are your opinions on graffiti?

  1. You should google banksy. He's an awesome
British graffiti artist. And love your blog!

  2. Hey Punksy! We're friends on Blogging Buddies; I really like you're blog! Every electrical box in the city we just moved from is decorated with street art; I'll try to snap you a few pictures. I think it's a really neat idea and it certainly makes sitting at a light more interesting.

  3. Love that balloon graffiti! But I don't think it's right to write or draw wherever we like, whenever the mood strikes. Some graffiti is so absolutely gorgeous, though, and I want to see it--perhaps there should be places in cities specifically designed for this kind of art.

Just wanted to stop by and let you know you're my pick of the week. I love your photos and fresh perspective, and so I'm sharing your link with my readers for the next week. I hope you don't mind--I couldn't find your grab it button (I have a tutorial on this if you were ever interested in making one) so I used your 'about me' photo.
Hope you have a fabulous weekend!

  4. Lizi I would love to see some more of these! Lindy, I used to live in Longmont Colorado where they have a wall that is filled with legally done graffiti - check out the art here: http://photos.dailycamera.com/Category/Jeremy-Papassos-Best-Photos-of/15218308_3MVoX/2/1138583878_S9TqB/Medium
That city has a graffiti problem in general - buildings and signs and the railcars are always being defaced - I think that the graffiti wall has become a positive outlet and popular art stop there. Thank you for making me your pick of the week!!

  5. Some graffiti really is beautiful. I think a graffiti wall would be helpful for people to express their art in a legal way. ;)
