fresh starts

It's been a bit of a whirlwind for us around here since August or so. I started back to work after a short summer and we got back into the swing of things. Our routine is weekly and the weeks have been flying by and now it's nearly December.

Mondays we get ready for the week. I am home with Ammy but we always are cleaning, cooking, preparing.

Tuesdays we pack up early in the morning and head for the mountains to my parent's home, where Ammy spends the day with Grandma and Grandpa and I give a quick goodbye and go to work.

Wednesdays, Ammy's sitter Mackenzie comes over. Ammy loves Mackenzie and they spend the whole morning just having fun. I get home before the afternoon really begins and Ammy is still napping.

Thursday we head back up to the mountains and Grandparents.

Friday we rest.

Saturday and Sunday are family days, project days, and days where I get some time to work on my latest creations.

My goal was to open my new shop by October -- I did it!! I call it Circuitry, a collection of accessories for women, stamped with bold inks. The stamps hand-carved and cut by me. I set up Circuitry on Etsy and I developed my own independent shop here: www.circuitrystudio.com.

Here's a peek at what I offer:

Super Soft, Cotton Headbands

Cozy Arm Warmers
Stretchy, Soft Fabric Necklaces
Colorful & Casual Fabric Bracelets
I've really enjoyed the whole process of starting my new shop, and I'll be launching a separate blog soon that is dedicated to the challenges, lesson and fulfillment that come with starting an online business.

What about Punksy and my monster hoodies? Still going strong on etsy: www.punksy.com

On top of it all, we're getting ready to welcome Baby Daly. We got a sneak peek last week:

Boy or girl? Still a mystery :)

The three of us are so excited to meet baby in January!!

catching up

It's been a long while since I've written, here or anywhere else. Last winter was a hard one for us, but springtime came with Amelie turning two and then some wonderful news: we are expecting a baby in January. Amelie will be a big sister soon, and we couldn't be more thrilled.

We seem to be going through a lot of changes, some big, some subtle. My job has transformed and is taking up more time in my week, so I am with Amelie a little less than before. I work short days but the change was felt profoundly between us and has taken some adjusting. In addition to being with my very patient and ever-supportive parents twice a week, we have an amazing nanny who Ammy has come to love.

With more work and morning sickness, it was a very different summer from last year. It was also crazy hot. And smokey. In June, the smoke from the wildfires drifted our way and made being outside in the 100 degree weather even more unpleasant. We worried for my parents and their mountain home, and were saddened by the news stories of lost homes and destroyed forests.

But now, as the summer comes to a close, I am feeling much better, the weather is beautiful, and there is much to look forward to.

Just a couple of weeks ago we took a short vacation with my family to the mountains. It was the perfect weekend getaway, and we had a lot of fun with everyone.

Not a week later we were headed to Virginia, this time by plane. I was worried about the plane trips with a toddler, but Ammy was a trooper and with the help of one of my awesome mom friends, I kept her busy with a plethora of little projects and treats.

She even rested a little.
We spent a week with the Dalys on their farm in rural Virginia. It was great to see everyone, and a relaxing vacation too.

leap day

The last day of February came a day late and thank goodness because if it hadn't I would have gone the whole month of February without posting and I really hate that I've been so flaky about my blog.

I wrote a big, long post about a huge house that is being built behind our house a couple of days ago, but it got to be so much of a tangent that I decided to postpone my post. Until today. Here it is, tangent forgone.

--

I woke up this morning and looked out my kitchen window. For months now construction crews have been digging, pouring, framing, raising walls and then a roof, and now even windows. A new house is going up, dreams are being realized for more than one family. Meanwhile, our dreams in this house seem to be fading and changing. When we bought this house, we stood on the back deck, looking out to the openness, the park and the trees, even the tops of the Rocky Mountains rising above them. This was one of the biggest selling points for us - this feeling of openness in an otherwise confined suburban space. No neighbors in the back - just space. We liked that, we wanted that. The house itself recognized its access to this space, with a gate on back fence that leads right through the field to the park. We would take Fiona, our beautiful and aging collie, out that gate and across the field to walk around the park that we have lovingly called "Fona Park" ever since.

I miss our girl, Fiona and now I long for that feeling of openness, that feeling as we stood there, new homeowners, in our mid-twenties. We knew what we wanted and we were making those dreams come true. Those dreams are fading now, as that space fills up in the landscape behind our house with a giant pile of dirt and a massive house designed to hold five residents and a caretaker. The homes will accommodate developmentally disabled adults who have never had the chance to live on their own. Their parents, having raised their children well into adulthood, are eager to have space to themselves again. Our old dreams are making way for these new dreams, for these families and their children.

And I know in my heart that our own dreams are changing and we are moving into a new part of our lives. The last five years have been incredible and life-altering. Buying and moving into this sweet little house. Jeremiah had one knee surgery then two, then five. Planning a wedding and marrying. 10 months of pregnancy and a beautiful baby girl. Job changes. Nearly two years of parenting with all the joys and challenges that have come with it. Many of these things we dreamed of and created, others were surprises.

Since Amelie was born, this neighborhood has become our world. Our neighbors our friends. In the fall a sign went up in the field behind our house. As winter began, they started laying the water pipes. By December there was a giant gaping hole in the ground with a complimentary two-story hill of dirt next to it. I called the construction company and asked them to please put a fence around the site that was only 20 feet from the playground in our neighborhood park, Fona Park. They did and the foundation was laid. This winter was a hard one for me and I stayed cooped up inside, watching as the frame went up and the walls.

Spring is in sight. Two feet of snow covered the neighborhood for weeks until just a couple of days ago. Under that snow lay tiny blades of green grass, the spiky beginnings of irises. The house will be finished by summer, for sure. Four more are slated for the field, but I am unsure of how fast it will all happen.

Our house is special to us. We love it and we love our neighbors. But its starting to feel small, like we can't breathe. Our backyard was a retreat, but now it is noisy from construction and the landscape is marred. Soon there will be no need for the gate out back. Now I'm thinking of alternatives. We'll plant fast-growing trees along the back fence. Perhaps a fence around the front yard so Amelie can play there while the construction continues. I think it's time to start thinking about new dreams, to once again think about what we really want and move in that direction.

we're freeeeeeeeeee!

All the 4th of July preparations got me thinking about liberty, freedom.

Yesterday my dog, Tekka, got loose at the park and chased down a rollerblader. To him, there was something truly ominous about this man who not only glided on wheels but pushed wildly forward with a ski pole in each hand. I ran after him (not even coming close to catching him) and he finally stopped and came back to me. It is only in hindsight that I can imagine the feeling he must have had the moment that, backing out of his collar, he was set free, bursting forward with youthful enthusiasm and power. Liberated. Free.

Though Amelie is still a good 15 years away from earning a driver’s license, she exerts her independence on two legs, a recent discovery that she can go anywhere she pleases. She pushes me away, wanting to be let down and waddles around on her very own. Happily, she too comes back to me, wants back up in my arms.

These two make me want to run and jump, enjoy some freedom of movement!

Have a happy holiday weekend out there.

ode to my dog

Oh, Tekka I do love you.
Even when I shout
“You’re driving me BANANAS!”
Like Oscar the Grouch
When you pull on the leash
Or bark like a wild man,
Waking the baby from her nap.

When the baby came I may have changed.
Hormones raging, you endured
Many cranky ramblings and
Me, pointing you out the back door.
But your goofy smile still makes me laugh.

I can still make your tail curl
And wag in great pleasure
When I put on my running shoes
And we walk and walk and walk
'Til your tongue falls out of your mouth.
Tekka, I love you, I do.

We adopted Tekka from Colorado Collie Rescue on New Years Day, 2009. He had traveled to Colorado from Wichita (my own home town) where he had been at the humane society there for some time. When he wasn’t adopted, the Kansas Humane Society could no longer hold him there and called around to find a shelter that had room for him. Colorado Collie Rescue in Longmont agreed to take him and he and a handful of other dogs were transported by a kind-hearted trucker, arriving in Denver in early December of 2008. It was right around that time that our beloved Fiona, a beautiful and sweet 9-year old collie, died suddenly. When we saw pictures of Tekka taken at the shelter (left) at the end of December, we knew we had to go meet him. It was love - and serendipity. He brought joy to a home full of sorrow and longing. Last year, when Amelie was born, Tekka immediately took to her and they have been the best of friends ever since.
